Washington, D.C., Feb. 1, 2025 — The Department of Defense has revoked the in-house press credentials of The New York Times, NBC News, NPR, and Politico, replacing them with four other outlets as part of what officials are calling a new annual media rotation policy.
The move has drawn criticism from press organizations, with some arguing it could limit public access to independent reporting on military affairs.
The newly credentialed outlets include One America News Network, The New York Post, Breitbart, and HuffPost. A Pentagon spokesperson said Saturday that the policy is intended to “broaden access to military reporting.”
The Pentagon Press Association, which represents journalists covering the Department of Defense, issued a statement raising concerns about how the policy was implemented and whether it could impact coverage of the U.S. military.
The White House has not commented on the decision, and it remains unclear whether the changes will affect the release of information to the broader press corps.
