SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (The Continent Times) — On Tuesday, Kenya Romero, a judge in the Dominican Republic (DR), put an ex-presidential candidate and former public works minister of DR under house arrest, Gonzalo Castillo. Romero also sent two ex-high-ranking officials to jail while they wait for trial in a record $347 million embezzlement case linked to illegal campaign financing.

Gonzalo Castillo, who ran for president in 2020 and got 37% of the vote but lost to current President Luis Abinader, was put under house arrest with a $365,000 bond. Former Treasury Minister Donald Guerrero and former Presidential Administration Minister José Ramón Peralta will be held without bail for 18 months, AP Reported.

Daniel Omar Caamano, the former comptroller general, was told he couldn’t leave the country, and Luis Miguel Piccirilo, the former head of the State Sugar Council, was also put under house arrest.
