Police chief says video of of Tyre Nichols beating cast ‘cloud of disgrace’

Justice SystemPolice chief says video of of Tyre Nichols beating cast 'cloud of disgrace'

After several members of the Scorpion team were implicated in the fatal beating of Black motorist Tyre Nichols, the Memphis police chief disbanded the unit. Saturday, the chief said the published footage cast a “cloud of disgrace” over the investigation into the fatal confrontation.

The city has yet to fully process the policemen’ (who are also Black) violent actions. After watching the video, many people have fresh questions about why tragic confrontations with police continue to occur despite pleas for reform. This Wednesday, Tyre Nichols will be laid to rest in Memphis after his burial service. Nichols’s arrest and subsequent death provoked worldwide grief and indignation. On January 10th, three days after being attacked by police during a traffic check, Nichols passed away. The second-degree murder charges against five cops led to their dismissal.

Harris, then the Vice President, was in attendance at the Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church and was asked to give a few remarks.
